Industrial Minerals Summary

Background

In the industrial mineral industry, product quality drives marketability and price. These bulk materials may require only crushing and screening to satisfy market specifications or product specifications are established by chemical assays. Often, physical or chemical upgrading can enhance market value. The range of expertise available at SGS Minerals Services allows us to test many process options.

Trace impurities can be removed by high intensity magnetic separation or by leaching. Gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation are typically applied to remove impurities or to upgrade the desired minerals. In some cases, complete dissolution and separation by means of solvent extraction is needed to achieve the specified purity.

Experience

Silicate Minerals (talc, pyrophyllite, micas, sillimanite, wollastonite, perlite)

  • Construct aspect ratio of sillimanite and wollastonite
  • Mineralogical source of out-of specification elements
  • Trace the source of mineral inclusions

Titanium Sands

  • Utilize heavy media separations to upgrade heavy minerals
  • Detailed analysis of mineral and particle hosts for titanium
  • Determine penalty and credit minerals, e.g., zircon, rutile, monazite, and particle purity

Cement

  • Quality control of daily sinter grade
  • Characterization of raw materials and new feed sources

Silica Sands

  • Identify and quantify deleterious trace minerals
