DURANGO GEOCHEMISTRY AND METALLURGY FACILITY

The SGS Minerals Services facility in Durango, Mexico offers world-class analytical and metallurgical services on-site and acts as a gateway to analytical and metallurgical facilities around the world. This fully featured facility was built in response to the increasing demand for SGS’ trusted services in Mexico.

Backed by the experience and expertise of our Centres of Excellence in Toronto and Lakefield, Canada, the Durango facility serves the Mexican mining and exploration industry with a comprehensive range of services, reducing the need to ship samples out of the country and thus minimizing turnaround times.

ANALYTICAL SERVICES

SGS has transferred a number of analytical methods to the Durango laboratory, tailored to the needs of the industry. The Durango lab is equipped with the same industry standard quality control procedures that exist throughout our network of over 110 laboratories, ensuring consistent data that meets the requirements of NI 43-101. Analytical capabilities on-site include:

  • Fire assay ICP-OES/AAS/gravimetric for Au and Ag
  • Aqua regia and cyanide BLEG leach analyses for Au (DIBK-AAS finish)
  • ICP-OES multielement packages, aqua regia, strong acid digestion and peroxide and borate fusions
  • Classical methods for high grade Pb and Zn samples

In addition to these analyses, the Durango facility also functions as a complete sample preparation laboratory reducing all samples to a pulp for ease of transportation. Samples can be shipped to our main analytical facility located in Toronto, Canada, which is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for specific registered tests.

METALLURGICAL SERVICES

The SGS Minerals Services facility in Durango provides bankable bench-scale metallurgical testing in support of scoping, pre-feasibility and geometallurgy programs. A broad range of mineral processing and hydrometallurgical testing is available. The facility also offers equipment sizing, plant mass balance and process optimization.

The Durango facility can access the additional expertise of our metallurgical professionals located throughout the world and can direct additional testing to other facilities as necessary.

Mineral Processing

SGS’ expertise in mineral processing has been extended to our Durango facility through technology transfer programs led by our global metallurgical Centre of Excellence in Lakefield, Canada. This ensures you receive the same high quality service in Durango that you’ve come to expect from the SGS metallurgy group globally. Testing available in Durango includes flotation, comminution, gravity, filtration, settling, specific gravity and bulk density determinations as well as testing to generate data for geometallurgy and equipment sizing.

Comminution

In most processing plants, the grinding circuit represents the largest capital investment. This fact underscores the importance of a well designed testwork program and accurate data. SGS is the acknowledged expert in comminution testing and has transferred this capability to Durango. Your comminution testing program will be designed in consultation with comminution experts from our network of metallurgical facilities. Bench scale comminution tests available from the Durango site include:

  • SPI testing
  • Bond Ball Mill Work Index
  • JK Drop Weight testing

Gravity

Gravity separation is the most well-proven and accepted technique of concentrating minerals and has been used as a primary form of mineral concentration for centuries.  Due to its high efficiency and low cost, gravity separation is always the first consideration in any flowsheet development program where there is sufficient difference between the specific gravity of the valuable and gangue minerals. In Durango, gravity concentration testing can be completed using:

  • Knelson concentrator
  • Wilfley shaking table
  • Centrifugal jig
  • Heavy liquid separation equipment

Flotation

Flotation is an incredibly robust and versatile process that is effective for a variety of ore types. Using standardized equipment, SGS will provide laboratory test programs which are designed to achieve your objectives quickly and efficiently. The Durango facility offers bench-scale flotation testing for metallic (Au, Ag, Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe) and non-metallic (silica, fluorite) ores.

Hydrometallurgy

SGS has transferred our bankable hydrometallurgical testing capabilities to our Durango facility. Leaching tests for gold, silver and copper ores can be carried out in Durango via:

  • Cyanide bottle rolls
  • Column leach testing
  • CIL and CIP (activated carbon testing)

In addition to the wide range of services and expertise available on-site, the Durango facility can also leverage the expertise of our geochemical and metallurgical professionals located throughout the world.
