GUIDE TO IMPORTATION OF SAMPLES INTO AUSTRALIA FOR METALLURGICAL TESTING
Australia has fairly strict quarantine regulations that control the importation of certain materials. Samples of rocks and ores from below about 3 meters are usually free of harmful microorganisms, as are samples of process products like concentrates. Samples from above about 3m may require special treatment to meet quarantine requirements. SGS Minerals Services Australia is an accredited quarantine laboratory and ensures that the treatment that may be required does not effect subsequent metallurgical testing requirements.

DOCUMENTATION NEEDED
When sending samples to SGS Minerals Services Australia for testing purposes, to expeentation and information should accompany the samples:

Click here to download a copy of the sample shipping letter.

1. A letter on a Company Letterhead as per the attached example. As seen the following information is required:

  • Name of company and subsidiary
  • Name of deposit/operation
  • Contact address, phone and facsimile numbers
  • Country of origin of samples
  • Nature of samples; e.g. rock, drill core, concentrates
  • Depth below surface from which samples originate. (Quarantine officials make regular microscopic checks for organic material.)
  • Reason for sending samples; i.e. testwork at SGS Minerals Services
  • Commercial value of samples; usually zero (importation tax is due on material with value)
  • SGS Minerals Services' quarantine permit number (200417732) and, if possible, a copy of the permit (available here 97KB)
  • Total weight of samples and how packed (eg 2kg lots)
  • SGS Minerals Services Australia address, phone and fax numbers
  • Contact at SGS Minerals Services Australia: i.e. Mr. Kevin McNamara (Lab Supervisor) or Mr. Colin Webb (Sample Supervisor)
  • Name of contact person at your own company

OTHER PERTINENT NOTES

  • It is advisable to use a shipping or freight agent.
  • All shipping / freight documentation, including the above letter, should be attached securely to the samples and to the Bill of Lading.
  • The samples should be securely packed and labeled including the name of the metallurgist at SGS Minerals Services who knows about the samples and the test program. (This can reduce delays once the samples arrive at the Laboratory).
  • The samples should preferably be packed in metal/plastic drums or bulka bags. If any wooden products are used i.e. boxes / pallets, the Australian Quarantine an Inspection Service require a letter from the timber company, stating that the timber has been kiln dried at 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes and that the timber used was produced within 3 months of it being kiln dried.
