Orebody Modelling and Reserve Estimation
As your exploration project advances into the resource development phase, SGS offers you complete orebody modeling and resource estimation services using geostatistical techniques. We are global leaders in this field and have provided these services since 1981 to companies involved in the development and extraction of:
At SGS, an orebody-modeling project starts with a critical review of existing drill hole and surface or underground sample data as well as maps and plans with current geological interpretation. Drill hole and/or sample databases are set-up to suit all the quantitative and qualitative information necessary to build a reliable resource model. Typically we will construct a geological and resource model from various data sources using the following steps:
- Database creation, standardization and validation
- Section plotting and interactive geological modeling
- Geostatistical analysis and block modeling
- Resource estimation and classification
Accurate resource estimation by a Qualified Person (QP) is an essential part of due diligence and a key part of your commitment to National Instrument 43-101 and the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC). SGS is an experienced leader in geostatistical techniques and will ensure your resource estimations are done to these standards with the accuracy and integrity that SGS is known for worldwide.

NI 43-101 Technical Reports, Resources Audits and Certifications
National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101) is a strict guideline developed by the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) that governs how issuers disclose technical and scientific information. It requires that all disclosure be based on advice by a "qualified person" who, under certain circumstances, may be required to be independent of the issuer and the property.
SGS has geological engineers who can act as your Qualified Persons. They can prepare technical reports, resource audits and certifications compliant with the NI 43-101. Our expert services may include a review of your current resource estimate, exploration titles, QA/QC programs, and the quality and integrity of your drill hole database.
Our audit services differ from our conventional resource modeling in that, rather than carrying out the calculations ourselves, we will analyze your data, procedures, calculations and results and submit our conclusions and recommendations as required for NI 43-101 compliance. As part of a control analysis we may undertake a verification of the geological model and database to:
- Validate the resource estimation parameters.
- Estimate your resource’s classification.
- Give appropriate recommendations relative to the project (drilling of additional holes, revised use of geostatistics and resource estimation parameters, etc.).
We have successfully completed independent qualification reports for companies worldwide.
- NI 43-101 Qualified Persons
- Due diligence - audits
- Technical reports
- Property evaluations
- Prefeasibility studies

Mobile Metal Ion Geochemistry (MMI™)
MMI™ is a cost effective exploration tool designed to produce very sharp responses (anomalies) directly over deeply buried mineralization. This can result in significant reductions in your exploration costs as traditional exploration techniques such as ground geophysics and drilling can be focused into smaller, prioritized exploration zones.
MMI™ measures mobile metal ions that have been released from ore bodies at depth and have traveled toward the surface. The MMI™ technique strips mobile metal ions from the exterior of soil particles using a partial dissolution without digesting the soil itself, to measure metal ion concentrations above the orebody in the parts per billion range.
SGS normally recommends an orientation survey prior to a full MMI™ investigation to determine optimum sampling criteria and to check for applicability in your specific geological environment. Our MMI™ experts are available to advise you on proper sampling technique for these surveys. We will act as your technical advisors to ensure your survey is performed to the level of excellence required to achieve optimum MMI™ results. Trust SGS, the global technical leader in geochemical analysis and proprietary owner of MMI™, for all your geochemical survey needs.

EXPLOMIN™
EXPLOMIN™ by SGS provides the routine, automated documentation of mineralogy, alteration and textures on core and crushed samples, for a statistically robust comparison that allows for 3D mapping and manipulation. It utilizes Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) technologies allowing for the automated mineralogical measurement of polished samples from drill core, reverse circulation (RC) chips, crushed reject, or channel samples.
This powerful automated procedure will prove especially useful to those in the resource development and pre-feasibility phases of their projects. Procedures such as vectoring to ore, future flowsheet development, and geometallurgical domain definition can be greatly enhanced by the improved accuracy and efficiency of EXPLOMIN™ and its ability to detect even the smallest alteration event or mineral inclusion. It can provide you with:
- Mineral identification and modal mineralogy
- Mineral associations and grain size and abundance
- Particle size, shape factor
- Deportment and liberation of three metals
- Deleterious minerals and environmental parameters
- False color image (jpg or bitmap) for textural interpretation.

Geometallurgical Services
SGS is the market leader in the use of geometallurgy, a cost-effective ore characterization technique that can be used during any stage of exploration, development or operation. Our 6-step Geometallurgical framework uses accepted geostatistical techniques to quantify the variability of the ore deposit in terms of mineralogy, texture and process parameters such as ore hardness, flotation characteristics, leach response and environmental impact. It is well suited to:
- Highly variable or strongly zoned deposits
- Several close deposits that will be milled together
- Remote or deep deposits that are readily drilled but not easily bulk sampled
- Projects requiring complex or new metallurgical approaches
- Brownfields or sight-of-mine exploration and expansion projects that exploit new, deeper or adjacent reserves
- Projects with significant legacy drill core that are being reevaluated due to new economic circumstances
